FMVSS 111 Compliance: Information and Compliant Backup Cameras
Effective May 1, 2018, the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111 (FMVSS 111) set new rear vision system requirements for vehicles with a 10,000-lb. or lower Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. FMVSS 111 requires an expanded field of view to 10- by 20-ft. zone behind a vehicle. This view enables the driver to detect areas behind the motor vehicle to reduce death and injury resulting from backing incidents, particularly incidents involving small children and disabled persons.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA’s) assessment of available safety data indicates that on average there are 267 fatalities and 15,000 injuries (6,000 of which are incapacitating) resulting from back over crashes every year. Of those, 210 fatalities and 15,000 injuries are attributable to back over crashes involving light vehicles, trucks and buses.
